#PSEWEB

It’s #TeamTuesday!  This week, we will be interviewing Sean Meister! Sean is our Awesome Coordinator for #PSEWEB! So Sean, tell us more, inquiring minds want to know!

What’s your name?
Sean Meister. Yes, my last name is actually Meister.

Interviewer: Can we call you, The Meist?

What post-secondary institution do you work for?
McMaster University in #HamOnt.

What do you do there?
I’m the Communications Coordinator in the Department of Family Medicine. Which can mean everything from fielding media calls to creating social content. My hobby within my job is trying to convince as many faculty members as possible to try a social media platform in a professional sense.

Interviewer: Sounds exciting!

One piece of technology, one caffeinated beverage and one social media platform… GO?!

  • Bread maker (eat your heart out iPhone, bread makers actually feed me – they’re the best thing since sliced bread!).
  • Strong, dark coffee. No fancy stuff.
  • Definitely Twitter.

Interviewer:  Ingenious, a bread maker!  I’ll bring the butter!

If you could go back to an older piece of technology for one day, what would it be?
Walkmans and cassettes. Not because they were such amazing fashion statements, but because you had to really work for your music. You had to actually carry a Walkman by hand or on your belt (and by belt meant a real risk of weighing down your pants to embarrassing levels). The cassette tapes meant a perfect (i.e. impossible) rewind was needed to replay a song – so you had to REALLY love that song! Now, music is so easily and readily available, I worry about not appreciating it as much as I used to.

Interviewer: Who doesn’t love a good jam! The sweet, sweet sound of rewind!

If you were a student today, what would you like to see from University’s web presence?
Something designed for me and also engages with me. A website that feels human and not like a sales pitch. With lots of stories, images, video. But also not too cluttered. Core information about programs, application processes, fees and financial assistance, etc. Easy to find info about the things that impact my choices and life. And a site with lots of social integration so I can connect with the school when and where I want.

Interviewer:  Enriching! This is the future of University websites, I can see it!

What are you most looking forward to in Montreal, aside from PSEWEB?
Trying a few of the local craft beers. Quebec has been putting out some great brews lately, but nothing compares to getting it on draft right in the brewery’s backyard. And, obviously, pairing them with a local smoked meat sandwich or poutine!

I know you said “aside from PSEWEB”, but it’s always so much fun to see all the PSEWEB folks, old and new. The community is such a great group and I always walk away feeling like I’ve learned so much. Montreal will be my fourth year at PSEWEB, so while I attend every year to learn and grow as a professional (which I do!), it now feels more like a reunion of friends than just another conference!

Interviewer:  Sounds like a fun filled plan and reunion! Montreal smoked meat for all!
